OCI Application Assistance & Indian Heritage Services
Your Overseas Citizens of Indian Original Journey Starts Here With Our Expertise.
Indian Heritage Services (IHS) provides specialist assistance to individuals of Indian origin and their families who wish to explore eligibility for, apply for, or resolve documentary issues relating to an Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) card.
For many applicants, establishing eligibility is not simply a matter of completing an application form. It may require historical research, retrieval of official records, verification of family relationships and the establishment of a clear documentary link between the applicant and an eligible Indian-origin ancestor.
With 15 years of experience resolve documentary issues relating to Indian heritage and documentation matters, IHS provides a structured, case-by-case service for clients in the United Kingdom and internationally, coordinating research, document preparation and practical follow-up in India where required.
Our objective is to help clients understand the requirements, identify evidential gaps and establish an appropriate course of action before proceeding with an application.
Our OCI Services
From genealogical verification to complex cross-border evidentiary filings, we manage every dimension of your Overseas Citizenship of India petition.
OCI Eligibility & Preliminary Case Assessment
Historical Document Retrieval & Verification
Nativity Certificate & NAC Assistance
Before significant time and expense are committed, it is important to understand the basis on which an OCI application may be made and what evidence may be required.
IHS can review the information available, including your family history, place of birth of relevant ancestors, citizenship history and existing documentation.
Our preliminary assessment may identify:
The potential eligibility route relevant to your circumstances.
The family relationship that must be established.
Existing evidence and missing documents.
Historical or documentary inconsistencies requiring investigation.
Further research or professional assistance that may be necessary.
Eligibility and the final decision remain subject to the applicable Indian law, official requirements and the decision of the competent Indian authorities.
A missing birth certificate or an incomplete family record can present a significant obstacle to an OCI application.
Depending on the circumstances, IHS can assist with identifying relevant record-holding authorities, coordinating searches and pursuing requests for historical documentation.
Where documents have been obtained, we can help organise the evidence and identify issues that may need clarification before submission.
The availability of historical records, the form in which they can be issued and whether an authority will accept particular evidence depend on the relevant records and official procedures. Document retrieval cannot be guaranteed.
In certain OCI cases, the relevant Indian authorities may request a Nativity Certificate or other evidence establishing an ancestor's connection with a particular place in India.
Where such a request arises, IHS can assess the stated requirement and help identify the appropriate authority and supporting documentation.
Depending on the case, our assistance may include:
Reviewing the written request from the relevant visa or consular authority.
Identifying the appropriate district or government department.
Organising the supporting documentary chain.
Coordinating enquiries and in-person follow-up in India where available and appropriate.
Liaising with relevant professional representatives where necessary.
A Nativity Certificate is not a universal requirement for every OCI application. Its necessity and the evidence accepted depend on the individual case and the instructions of the competent authority.
Application Documentation & Preparation
Complex, Historical & Exceptional Cases
OCI applications are subject to specific documentary, photographic and procedural requirements. Errors, omissions or inconsistencies may lead to requests for further information, delays or rejection.
IHS can assist clients in organising the documentation relevant to their case and identifying issues that may require attention before submission.
This may include reviewing:
Personal details and family relationships.
Passport and nationality documentation.
Evidence of the qualifying Indian-origin connection.
Name changes and discrepancies between records.
Photographs, scans and supporting documents.
Additional documents requested by the relevant authority.
Where appropriate, we can help prepare an organised supporting documentary file for the applicant to use in the official application process.
Some cases require more extensive investigation than a standard OCI application. Examples include:
Ancestral records dating back several generations.
Missing or untraceable birth certificates.
Conflicting names, dates or places of birth.
Ancestors who lived in British India before Independence.
Naturalisation or citizenship records that require further investigation.
Documentary gaps between generations.
Requests from consular authorities for additional evidence.
Cases requiring extensive liaison with Indian government departments.
IHS assesses these matters individually. Where the evidence is incomplete, we identify the outstanding issues and consider what further enquiries may be appropriate.
No particular outcome can be guaranteed, and the feasibility of a case depends on the evidence available, the applicable eligibility criteria and the decisions of the relevant authorities.

Clarity & Guidance
Essential answers regarding Overseas Citizen of India eligibility criteria, documentary prerequisites, and our specialized cross-border case management process.
Who qualifies for an Ancestry-Based OCI card?
What if our family lacks ancestral Indian passports?
We trace alternative statutory proofs including ancestral land revenue records such as Jamabandi or 7-12 extracts, historical school leaving certificates, domicile papers, and certified Nativity Certificates.
What is a Nativity Certificate and why is it needed?
How long does a complex genealogical OCI case take?
A Nativity Certificate is an official determination by an Indian state revenue authority confirming ancestral birth and origin, indispensable when direct passport records or colonial birth certificates are missing.
Standard cases take between three to six months, while complex historical cases requiring on-ground archival searches and revenue certifications typically average six to nine months.
Eligibility is determined by the applicable provisions of Indian law and official OCI guidelines. It generally concerns qualifying foreign citizens with specified Indian-origin family connections, subject to statutory conditions and exclusions. Certain categories, including some applicants with Pakistani or Bangladeshi citizenship or relevant ancestry, are subject to specific restrictions. Eligibility must be assessed against the current rules.
Can I apply if my grandparent was born in India?
Possibly, depending on the precise family relationship, the ancestor's status and the applicable eligibility criteria. The relevant relationship and qualifying circumstances must be established through acceptable evidence. IHS can help review your family history and identify the documents that may be required.
What if my ancestor's birth certificate is missing?
A missing certificate does not automatically establish that a case is impossible, but it can create a substantial evidential problem. Further searches or alternative records may be worth exploring. Whether substitute evidence will be accepted is a matter for the competent authority.
Can I obtain a Nativity Certificate through IHS?
IHS can assist with assessing the requirement, identifying the relevant authority and coordinating documentary enquiries and follow-up where appropriate. Issuance remains the responsibility of the competent government authority and cannot be guaranteed.
How long does an OCI case take?
There is no single reliable timeframe for every case. A straightforward application differs considerably from a case requiring historical research, missing records or a Nativity Certificate. Any estimate provided by IHS will depend on the circumstances and should not be treated as a guarantee of an official decision or processing time.
How much does OCI assistance cost?
Fees depend on the complexity of the case and the agreed scope of work. A case requiring only documentary organisation will differ from one involving several generations of historical research, record retrieval and in-person liaison in India.
Initial Review
Following an initial review, IHS can explain the proposed work and applicable fees before formal engagement. Government charges, courier services, certification, translation, travel and other third-party expenses may be additional where applicable.
Begin Your OCI Case Assessment
If you are seeking an OCI card through your Indian ancestry, have been asked to provide additional evidence, or are experiencing difficulties obtaining historical family records, IHS invites you to submit an initial enquiry.
The first step is to establish your family connection, identify the evidence available and understand what further work may be required.
Please provide a brief outline of your circumstances, including the relevant ancestor's name, place and approximate date of birth, your relationship to that person and the documents you currently hold.
Our team will review your enquiry and advise whether the matter may be suitable for further assessment.
